Top 3 mistakes learner drivers risk making before their test – you’ll lose your licence before officially getting it

Common offences committed by provisional licence holders includes driving without the correct insurance and speeding on public roads

THOUSANDS of learner drivers are at serious risk of having their licence being cancelled.

Nearly 80,000 provisional licence holders have committed driving offences and received points on their licence, all before passing their test.

That's according to a study by learner driver insurer , who say over 60% of new learners currently hold five to 10 points on their licence.

Learner drivers with points on their record are at serious risk of their licence cancelled if they receive further points.

In fact, six or more points incurred within two years of passing a driving test will result in a retake of the theory and practical tests.

The most common offence that provisional licence holders have committed is for driving without the correct insurance, followed by speeding on public roads.

Driving otherwise in accordance with a licence is another common breach - this could include driving without a full-licence holder present.

James Armstrong, CEO of Veygo, has urged new learners to review the rules of their provisional licence and avoid mistakenly committing offences that can have severe consequences.

He says: “It’s a misconception that penalty points are wiped when a provisional licence holder passes their test and moves to a full licence.

"These points will remain for four years, and if further offences are committed and points are received within two years of passing a test, it could result in a cancellation of a full licence."

This comes after a major change to EV laws this week could impact millions of drivers.

Meanwhile, a severely uneven stretch of concrete road has forced dozens of motorists in Basildon to pay out for repairs.
