versatile, economical and comfortable

We review the Hyundai Sante Fe (2007) from price to economy and all its features

THE stylish Santa Fe 4x4 is a model that has shown people are now prepared to pay more than £20,000 for a Hyundai.

In fact, plenty of buyers are splashing out nearly £25,000 for the top-of-the-range version. In many ways, the sophisticated Santa Fe symbolises Hyundai’s graduation to motoring’s big time. When I drove the car abroad at the start of the year, I was impressed.

Having just enjoyed an extended week-long test in the UK, I'’m even more impressed. Like the Coupe, the Santa Fe can hold its own in the styling stakes with much more expensive rivals. Put it next to a BMW X5 and it doesn'’t look out of place.

The Santa Fe is a nice balance. It’s a macho 4x4 but with softer, flowing lines and curves that make it pleasant on the eye. The inside boasts the best quality and finish I'’ve seen on a Korean car, with a smart, well-laid-out dashboard and serious comfort for five adults.

It’s also versatile because you can get the £600 option of seven seats – the third row is best for kids – and it’s even reasonable off-road. There’s a big improvement on road with a better ride, plus worthier engines, a choice of 2.2-litre diesel or 2.7-litre petrol.

I’'d go for the diesel because it’s refined and considerably more economical, giving 38.7mpg compared to 26.6mpg. Hyundai have increased the price of the Santa Fe, but the vehicle merits it. It ranges from £20,665 to £24,538.
