ultra-reliable off road

We review the Mitsubishi Shogun from price to economy and all its features

A DRIVE in the Shogun is like a drive in a 4x4 dinosaur.

It has the rugged Tonka Toy looks that everyone loved in the early part of the last decade but which today offers a more limited appeal.

Dinosaur ... the Shogun's days look numbered

Being a Mitsubishi, you know its going to be ultra-reliable and that it will take you anywhere you want to go off-road, where it is tremendously capable.

It’s the on-road ride where the Shogun has been left behind by rivals such as the Land Rover Discovery.

The 3.2litre diesel engine at low speeds is tractor noisy and although it has plenty of power it still feels sluggish pulling such a big vehicle.

Fuel economy is reasonable for a big 4x4. Mitsubishi say 36mpg but around 30mpg is nearer the mark, while C02 at 224g/km shows how far Mitsubishi have come with the ASX.

The cabin has plenty of room, with big comfy leather seats and plenty of equipment, but it never gets close to the quality or upmarket finish of the Discovery.

For the farming community not interested in a 4x4 as an image/fashion statement or life’s luxuries, and with its competitive price from £27,104 to £38,804, the Shogun is still a contender.

But, as with the dinosaurs, you get the feeling its days are numbered in the modern eco-friendly motoring world — unless it changes with the times.
