The French manufacturer is aiming to expand its electric car line-up with Brosse suggesting that the Espace model’s resurrection is “something we are contemplating.”

The return of the trusty and practical Espace will certainly excite the most nostalgic of drivers.

For the model’s first five generations, the Espace provided versatility as an MPV, earning its iconic status.

An electric, seven-seat version would provide strong competition to the likes of the  and , along with new  competitors, such as the  Mifa 7,  X9 and  Mix.

On the other hand, Brosse did highlight some possible challenges that could be presented in re-making the Espace MPV.

He said: “Technically I think it is possible, but after that we would have to consider if an  would be accepted by European customers.”

He added: “I think one technical problem we have is that after the car exceeds 2.0-2.2 tonnes, from a technical perspective it’s mandatory that the car becomes rear-driven.”

Expectant car fans can still hold out hope as Brosse suggests that the flexibility of the architecture would not prevent the Renault EV expansion.

He added: “There is no strict policy in Renault.

“Electric car platforms bring a number of benefits that allow us to optimise internal packaging, and from a design point of view they give you a lot more freedom.”

The announcement comes just weeks after the revival of an 80s classic in the form of the Renault 5.

The Renault 5 E-Tech will have a swanky all-electric re-birth and will include a unique baguette holder feature, in a nod to their French origins.

Design boss Lauren van den Acker said: “I think at this time when there’s so much insecurity in the world, where there are many dark clouds hanging left, right and centre, to make a few cars that really talked about the good times – and the times when the brand was alive – and stir all these positive emotions that people have [is a good thing].”

Sentimental drivers will be highly anticipating the return of the Renault Espace, despite a lag in electric car sales from British drivers last month.
