AN EXPERT mechanic has revealed how to fix a common oil issue for under £10 - not doing it risks a costly engine blowout.

Scotty Kilmer, who brings five decades of experience to the table, showed YouTube viewers how to save thousands with a quick and easy hack.

A common but dangerous problem with car engines is when they start burning oil.

This can be caused by all kinds of issues and can result in severe damage if left unrepaired.

Scotty revealed that one potential explanation could be a fault with the Positive Crankcase Ventilation (PCV) valve has failed.

This is a small rubber valve that is part of a mechanism designed to make cars more eco-friendly.

Scotty explained: "Many cars burn oil because the PCV valve has gone bad.

"It's part of the anti-pollution system, it allows fumes from the engine to be re-burned so they don't pollute the air.

"It's only supposed to let fumes come through, but when it breaks, it stays open and sucks oil into the engine."

This can have disastrous consequences, as burning the oil can cause a lack of lubrication in the engine.

If you leave it too long, the engine could blow out or seize up, requiring a replacement at a cost of thousands of pounds.

Thankfully, if the PCV valve is responsible, it's easy and cheap to fix.

All you have to do is buy a replacement valve for around £7 and swap it out for the old one.

You can do this at home with some basic tools or get it done professionally if you don't feel confident doing so.

Scotty added: "If your engine's burning oil, don't immediately think you need a new one.

"You might only need a new cheap little PCV valve".

It comes after Wheeler Dealers host Mike Brewer showed fans his favourite classic car as he shipped it off for his summer holidays.
