Knowing the true meanings of the grab handle, road condition indicators and gas tank locator can revolutionise life on the road - but few drivers know them.

GRAB HANDLE

Above each door in most cars you'll find a handle.

Most would assume this was to give passengers something to hold on to if the ride is a little bumpier than usual.

But, these handles are actually there to be used by someone with limited mobility trying to get in or out of the car, according to cars.com.

ROAD CONDITION INDICATORS

The next time you're driving in chilly conditions you may notice a dashboard light that looks like a road with a snowflake on it.

It's meant as a warning that the temperature outside is low enough for roads to freeze, according to mycardoeswhat.org, a website created by the National Safety Council and the University of Iowa.

GAS TANK LOCATOR

Anyone who's ever pulled into a gas station in a rental car and had to move as they've guessed wrong which side the gas tank was on will be grateful for this tip.

Even with many years behind the wheel of different vehicles motorists may be shocked to learn that there's a small arrow next to most gas gauges that shows which side it's on.

The feature has been standard on new cars for almost a decade.
