Super(car) ways to make money

Supercar tycoon Tom Hartley really knows his onions about buying and selling top motors having sold Britain’s first-ever second-hand LaFerrari for £2.1 million

WE’VE all been there – you’ve got £600,000 to invest, but you don’t trust shady banks. So where do you put it?

Well, if you’re smart, and obviously a lot richer than me, you put it into supercars. This month, it’s seven years since the recession hit, which sparked an enormous rise in demand and price of top-end motors.

Buying and selling isn’t exactly my area of expertise. Maybe that is because I don’t have the funds but, if I did, I would like nothing more than to spend it at a high-end dealership (“It’s an investment love, honest. I read it in The Sun”).

But one man who really does know his onions about buying and selling top motors is supercar tycoon Tom Hartley. This week he sold Britain’s first-ever second-hand LaFerrari, pictured above, for £2.1 million.

‘Prices rising at incredible speed

Tom explains: “In 2008, super-rich people panicked, terrified of losing everything they would work for if the banks crashed.

“They took their money out and put it into assets they could see and touch. It created an unbelievable demand for classic cars and certain supercars. At times, the prices were rising at such incredible speed that we were unable to keep up – and they just have kept on going upwards.

“There’s one 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 that we sold four times during those seven years. Every time it came back in our hands it cost £200,000 more.

“It started off at £600,000 and we paid £800,000, we paid £1million, £1.2million and we paid £1.4million – the same car. It’s incredible.

“A Ferrari that cost £6,000 in 1965 would set you back £600,000 in 2008. Today that car is worth £2.4million.”

Here, Tom reveals some of the biggest four-wheeled, tax-free earners from the last seven years.
