THE UK's oldest roadworks, which have been in place on a major bridge for nearly 10 years, have been voted the local town's 'best attraction'.

The works were introduced on a temporary basis in 2015 but have remained closed off ever since.

They have been supporting the Woodend Bridge in Witham, Essex, for going on a decade.

Residents of the town have seemingly found the funny side of the disruption, showing their displeasure with the delay by boosting its rank on TripAdvisor.

If you look up "things to do in Witham" on the popular review site, the roadworks have somehow found their way into first place on the list.

Locals and tourists alike have posted a series of tongue-in-cheek reviews urging others to visit the site.

Some even went as far as to dub the works a "national treasure".

One wrote: "Although it can be slightly annoying to be stuck at these lights, the pure joy and euphoria you feel when the light is green is out of this world.

"Highly recommend just for the light roulette of whether lights will be green or unnecessarily red for 15 minutes of your day.

"Took my children and they were so excited to shout 'red' and 'green' when the lights eventually changed."

Another joked: "This has become a historical site.

"There are great views of Witham and the surrounding areas from this bridge.

'UK's wonkiest road' so damaged it was used as a makeshift skate park to finally be fixed after being shut for 2 YEARS

"I would definitely recommend a visit to this national treasure and see if you're lucky enough to see the lights change and get stuck at the now famous red light."

Indeed of the bridge's 27 reviews, 26 boast a five star rating, with only one three-star review.

And that was only because the reviewer wasn't delayed enough as they explained: "I don’t usually like leaving a poor review but after wanting to see what all the fuss was about, I was incredibly disappointed to hit a green light with little/to no wait times.

"I’m sure I’ll be back as this attraction isn’t going anywhere."

It comes after a homeowner was stunned when their neighbour asked them to give up their parking space - even though she didn't need it.
