Speculation has been rife for years that the Blue Oval was looking to bring back some of its best-loved blasts from the past.

However, it was only in November last year that a camo-wrapped version of the car was spotted in Germany, fuelling rumours of an imminent return.

The company has since confirmed it will unveil a new "Sports Crossover" EV today which is expected to bear the Capri name.

The original Capri launched in 1968 and enjoyed a nearly 20-year production run, becoming one of the most popular Fast Fords of all time.

It quickly gained a cult following among petrolheads and remains revered to this day.

However, while the MkI was a two-door sports car with a roaring V4, the new version is set to look more like a compact SUV and be powered by an electric drivetrain.

Last month, Ford shared a bizarre update on the car, with the phrase "the legend is back 2024" graffitied onto the firm's factory in Cologne.

The company also dropped a pair of teaser images showing the remodelled front and rear lights, with white LEDs set into warm orange bodywork.

Fans accessed the images through an unusual advert which quoted Manchester United legend Eric Cantona, saying: "When the seagulls follow the trawler, it’s because they think sardines will be thrown into the sea.

"Now, throw these images in the online sea and find out who follows."

A brief history of fast Fords

Readers were then directed to a WhatsApp chat that released the images when the used the codeword "comeback".

Little did we know that the quote foreshadowed Cantona fronting the car's marketing campaign, including playing a starring role in a whacky ad for the unveiling.

The Prem ace will be at the helm of the big reveal, which is set to take place at 1.30pm this afternoon.
