Range Rover Sport is knockout for boxing world champion James DeGale
While boxing is his main game, Britain's IBF world super-middleweight champ has a strong passion for stylish motors.
BOXERS love their cars – just look at Floyd Mayweather’s collection of Bugatti Veyrons.
So when I got the chance to chat with IBF world super-middleweight champion JAMES DeGALE, – who was Britain’s first Olympic gold medallist to become a world champ – I had to chuck him a few questions about motors.
Here’s what he told me:
What was your first car and how much did it cost you?
It was the very old-style Vauxhall Corsa 1.4L model, the one that was bubble shaped.
I was so desperate to get my first car after I passed my driving test that I wanted the first car I saw, which was the Corsa . . . and it was a green-gold colour.
What do you drive now and why did you buy it?
I now drive a Range Rover Sport 3.0 HSE Dynamic.
It’s packed with extras like a panoramic roof, black alloys with bigger wheels and an electric step.
Since I passed my test I’ve always wanted a Range Rover so I had one included in my first professional promotional agreement that I signed.
Ever since then I’ve upgraded to newer models every couple of years.
They’re so comfortable it feels likes it’s driving you.
Without a doubt it’s my dream car and the king of the 4X4s.
What’s your dream car and do you think you will ever buy it?
If I had another dream car it would have to be a Lamborghini Aventador.
That would be my weekend car.
The only thing about supercars is that while they are fun to drive, they are very uncomfortable.
If you’ve been in one a couple of hours, your back is aching.
Have you ever been the target of road rage?
And did they back down the moment they realised who you are?
Yes, I’ve had it a couple of times, not surprisingly when I’ve cut someone up and they’ve sped up alongside me to see who it is and give me some stick.
But then they realise it’s me and they give me a smile and a fist up!
I try to avoid getting angry when I’m on the road.
Luckily, if I’m heading to the gym to do a training session I can let off my anger when I’m in there.
Which three passengers would you take on an ultimate road trip, and why?
It would have to be on Route 66 with three of the greatest boxers of all time.
Muhammad Ali because he’s the ultimate legend in the sport and for the stories he could tell.
And Sugar Ray Leonard, who competed in some of the greatest rivalries.
Then it would have to be Floyd Mayweather. He’d be pretty fun and we’d have some right banter on the drive.
Have you ever had sex in a car?
My mum’s going to read this!
All I’ll say is I’m glad that there’s plenty of room in my Range Rover.
