DIESEL DISCOUNT

Trade in your old dirty diesel and get up to £2,000 off a new BMW, Mini, Volkswagen or Audi

New money off scheme launched by German manufacturers to clean up emissions in the wake of diesel recalls

OWNERS of old dirty diesels can cash in with up to £2,000 off a new BMW, Mini, Volkswagen or Audi.

BMW has announced its "lower emissions allowance" that offers £2,000 off while VW Group revealed it would bring its existing scheme from Germany into the UK.

To qualify for the BMW discount, drivers must trade in a diesel-powered Euro 4 or older car - from any brand - that they've owned for 12 months or more.

It means cars registered before September 2009 will be eligible with BMW promising "a suitable average price" at trade in.

The replacement car must be an all-electric car, a plug-in hybrid or a Euro 6 compliant model with CO2 emissions of less than 130g/km.

This actually includes most of BMWs range with everything from a hatchback 1 Series to the X5 offered with emissions below this threshold.

If you're switching into a plug-in, like the i3, then the £2,000 discount can be added to the £4,500 government grant.

It also applies to a raft of Mini models including the Cooper hatchback and Countryman.

The BMW offer runs until December 31 this year.

Meanwhile, VW Group confirmed it would introduce a similar incentive but is yet to announce UK specific details.

Currently, owners of old diesels of any brand in Germany can cash in with discounts of up to €10,000 on top of the range VW and Audi models.

Smaller discounts are offered for cheaper cars but all incentives run alongside any government grants.

Harald Krüger, BMW's Board Chairman, said: “For almost two years now, diesel technology which is cutting-edge, highly efficient and popular with customers has been deliberately and publicly discredited.

"This has caused tremendous uncertainty among millions of drivers and it’s not going to get us anywhere."
