Ultra-rare 1970s Maserati Merak owned by Dodi Fayed set to sell for £200,000
Originally bought by Mohamed Al-Fayed in the 70s, this classic Maserati was owned by the late Dodi and is now up for sale at auction
A RARE Maserati once owned by the late Dodi Fayed is up for sale for £200,000.
The Maserati Merak 3000 was bought new by billionaire Mohamed Al-Fayed before being passed down to Dodi.
Just 781 Meraks were ever made in the 1970s and very few were given this limited edition green paintjob.
This example even includes a gold plate showing its first owner as the former Harrods and Fulham boss.
The Merak made its debut at the Paris Motor Show in 1972 and featured a mid-mounted engine like many supercars of the era from Lamborghini and Ferrari.
It was named after the Beta Ursae Majoris, a star in the northern circumpolar constellation.
And Al-Fayed bought this rare model from the Maserati factory in 1973 before shipping it to his London car collection in 1980.
It’s done just 17,000km (10,500 miles) and is in great condition having been so rarely used.
The original wheel with original tyres fitted in the 70s are included along with the original sales brochure and leather samples for the interior.
Under the bonnet is a 3.0-litre V6, producing 190bhp, that was capable of over 150mph.

Mark Borgman, of , said: “The Merak is one of the most recognisable sports cars to have ever been produced from the 1970’s supercar era.
“This car is not only one of only 781 produced but its unique shade of green makes it even more of a rarity.
“Coupled with its pristine condition and low mileage, this car will sit pride of place in any car enthusiast’s garage.”
The sale of the famous model comes 20 years after Dodi was tragically killed in a car accident in Paris with Princess Diana.
