BASIC INSTINCT

Peugeot Instinct concept predicts the future of the car…and it’s not a car at all but a moving smartphone

According to Peugeot, the car of the future is not a car – it’s a “device”.

A transportation “device” that can switch on the lights at home, monitor traffic and text if you need to leave earlier – and, of course, drive itself.

This is Peugeot’s Instinct concept and it’s effectively your personal control centre. Your best friend. Your PA.

It uses something called the “Internet of Things” to talk to other devices and make your life easy.

Spotted the steering wheel? Yes, you can drive if you really want to.

But in autonomous mode, the steering wheel folds away, the holographic display switches from speedo to journey timer – and you can sit back and watch TV on the giant passenger screen.

A Peugeot spokesman said: “The car will become a device connected to your home, connected to your phone. It will save time and give you more freedom."

Designers also used the Instinct concept to experiment with concrete flooring – yes, really – and trainer fabric on the seats.

I very much doubt you’ll see any of that on the new 508 and 208 coming in 2018 and 2019 but that new light signature will be seen on future road cars.

GIVE US A STEER When will driverless cars come to the UK, how do self-driving vehicles work and are they safe?

One more thing. Is it just me – or does the front of this “device” remind you of Jackson Storm in Cars 3? Thought so. And they’re both hybrids.
