Car scrappage schemes 2018 – VW, Ford, Mercedes, BMW, Hyundai and Vauxhall deals and discounts explained
SCRAPPAGE schemes on old, dirty motors have been extended into 2018 by car manufacturers.
If you own an older car you can cash in on one of the discounts offered by several companies - here's the lowdown..
What is the car scrappage scheme?
Concerns over the impact of diesel cars on NOx levels were raised by the Volkswagen emissions scandal in September 2015.
A subsequent Department for Transport investigation found 37 top-selling diesel cars exceeded the legal limit required for laboratory pollution tests when driven for 90 minutes on normal roads.
The government considered a scrappage scheme to rid the roads of dirty models but ditched the idea in favour of a diesel tax.
Instead, car manufacturers launched schemes in 2017 to trade-in old models - both petrol and diesel - to encourage buyers into cleaner models.
Originally they were due to end but the discounts have been continued into 2018 to help boost flagging sales.
Which car manufacturers are involved?
No less than 26 car brands launched schemes in 2017 with just over half being extended into the new year until March.
Hyundai launched a Scrappage and Emission Reduction Scheme at the end of August.
Vauxhall introduced a Scrappage Allowance Scheme in May, with the initial intention it would run until June. However it was extended until the end of September after a rise in sales.
BMW and Mini launched their Lower Emissions Incentive Scheme at the beginning of August, and Mercedes-Benz followed with the Diesel Changeover Bonus.
Days later Ford's Scrappage Scheme was revealed.
Volkswagen and Toyota have also now announced their own schemes and Renault, Nissan and Fiat - including Alfa Romeo and Jeep - have followed suit.
French motor giant the PSA group - which bought Vauxhall earlier this year - began offering a scrappage incentive on new Peugeot, Citroen or DS models from September 8.
Mazda and Suzuki also announced similar schemes.
What cars are accepted?
- Ford - any Euro 1-4 rated diesel or petrol car or commercial vehicle registered before 31st December 2009
- Hyundai - any Euro 1-4 rated diesel or petrol vehicle registered before 31st December 2009
- Kia - any diesel or petrol car more than seven years old
- Nissan - any Euro 1-4 rated car registered before 2010
- Renault - any Euro 1-4 rated car registered before 2010
- Toyota - any diesel or petrol car more than seven years old
- VW Group (including VW, Audi, SEAT, Skoda) - any euro 1-4 rated diesel car registered before 2010
- Peugeot - any car registered before December 31, 2010
- Mazda - any petrol or diesel vehicle registered before December 31, 2009
- Mitsubishi - any Euro 1-4 petrol or diesel registered before the end of 2009

When do the deals run out and are there other restrictions?
Most of the deals run until March - the end of the first quarter of 2018.
The exception is Toyota which closes the deals at the end of January.
However, as these discounts were all due to end at when 2017 finished, there's a chance they could be extended again.
You also need to have owned the car for a period of time before cashing in - to stop you buying a cheap motor and immediately scrapping it.
Mitsubishi, VW Group and Toyota require you to have had the car for six months while Kia requires three months of ownership.
Ford, Dacia, Hyundai, Nissan, Peugeot and Renault are more lenient, though. You only need to have owned the car for 90 days before qualifying for a scrappage deal.
With Mazda's offering, you only need to show 60 days of ownership.
All of the schemes accept cars from other brands - so you can ditch an old Ford and buy a new Audi and still get the discount.
Beware: most scrappage schemes cannot be combined with other new car offers, so check the best deal before you buy.
