Jaguar Land Rover goes electric from 2020 as it previews all-new classic E-Type and Future Type concept YOU could be driving by 2040

JAGUAR Land Rover will add electric power to every model launched from 2020 – and it’s even predicting a driverless car for 2040.

All new Jaguar and Land Rovers will feature hybrid or plug-in technology in three years – and the electric revolution even starts next year with the I-Pace SUV on sale.

Dr Ralf Speth, Jaguar Land Rover chief executive officer, said: “Every new Jaguar Land Rover model line will be electrified from 2020, giving customers even more choice.

“We will introduce a portfolio of electrified products across our model range, embracing fully electric, plug-in hybrid and mild hybrid vehicles.”

To mark its electric promise, Jaguar has launched an all-electric version of its classic E-Type and a Future Type concept for 2040 and beyond.

The 2040 vision features a revolutionary, removable smart steering wheel that lives in your home and can summon your car, book a table and even knows what’s in your fridge.

The concept also has a 2+1 social seating setup and can provide you with information on family, friends or work at the flick of a switch.

It’s fitted with tech to talk to other cars on the road to increase road capacity and prevent accidents – and the narrow width means it’ll slot into car parks with ease.

And Jaguar predicts you won’t even own the driverless car but will be a member of an on-demand car sharing club by 2040 – although you will still be able to drive the car as well as let the computer take over.

In the more immediate future, the British manufacturer has created an all-new classic E-Type with an electric engine capable of 0-60mph in just 5.5 seconds.

Acclaimed as “the most beautiful car in the world”, the E-Type Zero is a 1968 Series 1.5 Roadster dragged into the 21st century.

It’s been restored and converted at Jaguar Land Rover’s Classic Works facility – a stone’s throw from where the original E-Type was born.

As well as electric power, the modern day E-Type also has LED headlights and a range of 170 miles. Prices have yet to be announced but it’ll go on sale next year to coincide with the I-Pace.

The I-Pace is a pure-electric SUV that’ll hit dealers in 2018 – expected to be priced around £60,000.

It’s the most radical model ever from Jaguar and takes direct aim at the Tesla Model X.

It’s the official start of Jaguar’s drive for electric power on all models from 2020 – a move that also includes Land Rover cars, too.

It follows the news that Honda will ditch diesel from the next generation CR-V with only hybrid or petrol engines on offer.
And it mirrors Volvo’s commitment to focusing on hybrid and EV tech from 2019 with more manufacturers expected to follow suit ahead of the 2040 diesel and petrol ban.
