BMW has filled yet another gap in its lineup of SUVs with the launch of the all-new look-a-like X2.

The sporty crossover slots between the dinky X1 and compact X3 but you'd be hard pushed to tell the difference.

The German brand is looking to cash in on the SUV boom with another identikit model.

Buyers will have to stump up £34,000 for the "new" SUV with BMW claiming the coupe style gives it a sportier feel.

And it's also packed with the latest tech including a wifi hotspot and smartphone wireless charging.

You can also hook up your phone to the car with Apple CarPlay - although Android Auto isn't an option.

There's also a 6.5-inch touchscreen nav system but you can boost this to 8.8-inches on the options list.

A colour head-up display can also be specced and the car is packed with handy driver assistance systems, too.

The regular lane departure warning, cruise control, auto-braking and traffic jam assistants are in place - plus a self-parking mode complete with rear view camera.

The X2 is billing itself as a sporty SUV and performance figures are impressive.

The standard 2.0-litre diesel capable of 137mph and 0-62mph in 6.7 seconds - and we may even see a super-fast M-badged version in the future.

For now there are petrol and diesels available from launch - and the car is also able to take a plug-in hybrid engine although there's no date on when this might go on sale.

The X2 also gets BMW's clever all-wheel drive system - while speccing the M Sport pack will tune up the car for a bit more fun on the road.

M Sport X is also available with performance add-ons and luxury trim - although you'll have to splash out around £5,000 over the standard car.

For most SUV buyers, practicality will be important and the BMW gets a 470-litre boot which should be big enough for a family getaway or a generous food shop.

The new model is due to go on sale in March 2018.
