A 1980s boy racer Ford Escort RS2000 that became a rally legend is heading to auction for £90,000 – and it’s done just 1,000 miles
The immaculate RS2000 Custom has done less than 1,000 miles after two Ford collectors barely drove the car. It's set to sell for £90,000 as prices for 1980s Fords continue to soar
CHANCES are if you owned a Ford Escort in the 1980s you spent most of the time driving it like you stole it.
Which makes this Mk 2 RS2000 ultra-special as it's been so well looked and covered just 927 miles.
The barely used boy racer is in immaculate condition and has been owned by two Ford collectors in its 37-year history.
The original diamond white paintwork is still flawless and there are even marks on the doors and underside from the factory sponges used during its pre-delivery inspection.
With prices for 1980s Ford models going through the roof with collectors, this RS2000 is now set to sell for £90,000 at auction.
What makes it more desirable is that it's a Custom edition meaning it's just one step down from the rally car that was beating all comers on track at the hands of Roger Clarke and Ari Vatanen.
The white rally car has a four-cylinder 2.0-litre "Pinto" engine which gives it a top speed of 108mph.
It has a chocolate brown interior typical of the era and the dashboard is lined with leather, however the seats are predominantly cloth - and there's no radio or aerial.
This one-of-a-kind model was bought to order in 1980 by Mr. F.N. Dunstan of Nottingham.
Mr Dunstan barely used it and covered just 700 miles before selling it to a keen Ford collector in the 1980s.
He stored it in an air-tight chamber to perfectly preserve it.
It was then sold to its current owner, a fellow Ford collector who had coveted the motor, around eight years ago.
Joe Watts, Silverstone Auctions classic car specialist, said: "I've never seen anything like this car - it even smells new inside.
"It is like it just came out of the factory.
"The rally version was a world-beater at the time, and everyone aspired to the RS2000 and the 'Custom' version was the best of the best.
"You could buy one of these in 1980 and imagine you were Roger Clark or Ari Vatanen.
"Everyone loved them then and they now have a huge following among collectors."
The car is being sold by Silverstone Auctions at the Birmingham NEC on November 11.
