MOTORISTS in some parts of Britain are paying nearly £1,000 more to insure their cars in a postcode lottery rip-off.
Londoners are the worst hit, with the capital taking the top five hotspots for highest insurance premiums.
The average cost of car insurance in the UK is around £826.
But in West London it is more than double that, at £1,735.
Those in the east of the city pay £1,516, in West central London they have to fork out an average of £1,434, and in North London it is £1,310.
The postcode premium hotspots are revealed in research by comparison site GoCompare, famed for its opera singer ads.
It found Galashiels in the Scottish Borders is the cheapest postcode with drivers paying around £545.

Exeter is second at £559 and Truro in Cornwall is third at £562.
GoCompare said crime rates, dangerous roads, the number of claims in an area and type of car can all influence premiums.
The site’s Matt Oliver said drivers should consider changing vehicles to “something more affordable with a smaller engine” and should never just auto-renew their insurance.
