MAYDAY

The most dangerous day on British roads could take place THIS weekend – and these are the drivers most at risk

More insurance claims were made on Bank Holiday Friday last year than any other, and these are the drivers most likely to be involved in an incident

THIS weekend could see the most dangerous day of the year on British roads.

The May Spring bank holiday is one of the most popular for Brits to enjoy a road trip, but also sees more car insurance claims than any other period.

According to 2017 figures, this Friday May 25 could be the day when drivers are most at risk of being involved in a collision.

Endsleigh Insurance Services found that Friday May 26 last year saw more car insurance claims than any other, as drivers hit the road a day early on the way to their weekend getaway destination.

The insurance company recently collected data on the final weekend in May 2017, and uncovered the areas where most collisions occurred - and the drivers most likely to make a claim.

England's South East proved the busiest hotspot for insurance claims, with just under a fifth of all incidents occurring in that region.

The Midlands came in a close second, with 17 per cent of claims, while Wales proved the safest, making up just four per cent.

When it came to the age of drivers involved in collisions, the ten most common ranged from 19-28.

And males aged 20-22 were most likely to be caught up in an incident on the road.

Based on last year's records, Endsleigh Insurance Services predicted 21-year-old male drivers in the South East would have the highest chance of making an insurance claim for this Friday - meaning those motorists need to take extra care on the roads.

Julia Alpan, head of marketing at Endsleigh, said: “We were surprised to see that the most dangerous day last year fell during the spring months, rather than the winter when you’d expect the roads to be icy and more treacherous.

“This year, the date falls on a bank holiday so we’re anticipating it could be a record day for claims once again.

"We want to urge people to take their time on the roads so they can enjoy their long weekends incident-free."

Last year, experts predicted the early May bank holiday would contain the most dangerous day.

But more claims were actually made for the final weekend of the month, making the Spring holiday more risky.

They estimated more than 10,000 accidents over that weekend, costing drivers around £21million.
