PARK AND WIDE

These are the motors too big for the average British parking space

Research has found 129 models across the new and used market are too big for the average UK parking bay

WITH new cars only getting bigger, Britain's narrow roads are struggling to cope.

Longer and wider vehicles are the norm with manufacturers, but it's not just on the street where they cause headaches for drivers.

According to an investigation by , around 129 models from a range of manufacturers are too big to fit inside the average UK parking space.

And it's making shopping centre car parks a nightmare to navigate for motorists.

The standard parking bay measures 4.8m by 2.4m - but some new models are far bigger than those specifications.

While none are too wide, plenty of motors are so big drivers will struggle to open the doors in busy spots - and some longer cars overhang their space by more than half a metre.

  • Lexus LS (2007-2012)
  • Chrysler Grand Voyager (2001-2015)

When it comes to length, the Renault Trafic Passenger is by far the biggest, overhanging the average space by 60cm.

The nine-seater people mover might be perfect for packing in the whole family, but trying to park it anywhere in the UK will be a frustrating task.

Popular trade vehicle the Nissan Navara is next in line, 52.2cm too long for a bay, while the luxury Mercedes-Benz S-class Hybrid hangs over by 44.6cm.

Cars which stick out well over the parking bay are far more at risk of damage from other motorists and objects like shopping trolleys.

WIDE LOAD You could be fined for breaking UK width restrictions if you drive one of these popular SUVs

And wide motors are at risk of scratch damage as well, as drivers try to squeeze out of tiny door openings.

At least 10 different models are so wide they would have less than 22cm either side for the driver and passenger to get out if parking in a busy shopping centre bay.

The Land Rover Discovery Sport is the largest, with just 16.5cm either side, while BMW X6 and Kia Carnival Sedona owners also dealing with just 20cm of wiggle room.

Earlier this month, we reported how the Discovery SUV could see drivers slapped with a fine for breaching UK width restrictions on certain roads.

Standard Range Rover models were also too wide, falling outside the six-foot and six-inches (1.981m)  measurement in certain restricted zones.
