Motorists in the South East coastal destination were slapped with a whopping 138,957 Parking Charge Notices in 2017, compared to just 124,069 local cars on the road.

And according to research by Admiral Insurance, the UK's capital came in a close second.

London also saw more tickets issued than registered motors, with 101 fines dished out per 100 vehicles - the same rate as Scottish capital Edinburgh.

The top three were far above the rest, with Newcastle coming in at fourth with 83,142 notices issued, some 78 for every 100 cars.

Glasgow and Luton were close behind, while Portsmouth rounded out the top 10 with 46 tickets per 100 motors.

On the other end of the spectrum, Stockton on Tees was the city where motorists were least likely to be fined for parking offences, with authorities dishing out just three tickets for every 100 cars last year.

Admiral's research also identified the areas where motorists were most at risk of suffering damage to their vehicle as part of a parking accident.

Motorists in York and Aberdeen were also at high risk of having their car damaged in the car park, closely followed by those in Middleborough and Ipswich.

“Our advice to all drivers to avoid both PCNs and parking accidents is to try and plan where you will park in advance and to take your time when manoeuvring into and out of parking spaces, especially in older car parks where the bays can be a tight fit for modern vehicles.
