It failed to make the £500,000 Bonhams guide price.

But it cost £100,000 more than a new Rolls-Royce Phantom, the firm’s top-of-the-range limo.

For the same price you could buy 65 Dacia Sanderos, the UK’s cheapest new car.

The plate was bought by an unnamed buyer. It is not known whether it is an investment or will go on to a Rolls-Royce.

The most expensive registration plate was 25 O which sold for £518,000 four years ago.

However, 'F1' is believed to be the world's most sought-after registration plate and is currently on sale for £15million.

Its been licensed to a 2013 Bugatti Veyron SuperSport owned by Afzal Kahn, the founder of UK-based car modifier Kahn Design.

Having been purchased for £375,000 from Essex Council in 2008, the 44-year-old reportedly rejected a £6million bid for the plate four years ago.
