At the time, Clapton paid £177,500 to get the motor on the road, and ordered more than £3,000 in additional extras for it, including rear parking sensors, heated front seats and enamel Ferrari badges on the wings worth £1,045.

The Layla singer owned the car for four years, covering just 12,000 miles in that time.

He said he found it a large car to drive on the Surrey roads near his home, but an "absolute delight" to drive through France to his house in the south.

The avid car lover sold the Ferrari in 2008 and it has since changed hands on several occasions.

The blue two-door has 29,000 miles on the clock and has been given a pre-sale estimate of between £65,000 and £75,000.

It has a cream leather interior, four seats and a spacious boot designed to take six pieces of luggage custom made for the car.

It is powered by a spectacular 5.7-litre V12 engine that produces an impressive 533bhp, and has a top speed of close to 200mph.

The stunning Ferrari will go under the hammer at H&H Classics' Imperial War Museum sale on October 17.

Damian Jones, Head of Sales at H&H Classics, said: “This is a car with all the fiery temperament and driving pleasure of a thoroughbred Ferrari, combining thrilling performance, agility and safety.

"But it also goes a step further, offering rear passengers two comfortable, roomy seats.

"The 612 Scaglietti was designed to combine the roominess of a grand tourer with the blistering performance of a sports Berlinetta.

"In terms of aerodynamics, this meant ensuring maximum performance despite the larger dimensions overall.”

John Markey, who consigned the car for H&H, said: "Any celebrity provenance adds a great deal to a car and this is no exception.

"People will jump at the chance to own a small piece of history relating to one of our greatest ever guitarists."
