SLOW BURNER

More than 31,000 Zafiras still not repaired after original Vauxhall recall – despite it starting almost THREE YEARS ago

Thousands of potentially dangerous Vauxhall Zafiras are still on UK roads after drivers failed to respond to urgent recall notices issued almost three years ago

MORE than 31,000 Vauxhall Zafiras still haven't had vital recall work carried out, despite warnings being issued almost three years ago.

According to the manufacturer, around 13.5 per cent of the 235,000 fire-risk Zafira B models included in the original 2015 recall are yet to be repaired.

The initial recall was issued over concerns a design fault in the model's heater blower motor could lead to fires in cars made from 2005-2014.

And just last week, Vauxhall issued a new recall of some 47,000 Zafira B's fitted with Electronic Climate Control (ECC) over fears they too could burst into flames.

But a recent investigation by has found thousands of motorists have failed to take their cars in to be repaired - leaving them a potential fire-risk on the road.

Despite having repaired around 203,000 Zafiras and contacted all owners from the original group, the British manufacturer claims over 31,000 customers have failed to respond to its recall.

A Vauxhall spokesman told Auto Express: “We continue to pursue owners of the remaining vehicles so that we can carry out the recall work, however this can sometimes take longer if a change of ownership is involved, or if owners persistently ignore our letters.

"There are also some vehicles which have been taken off the road or scrapped since the recall notice was issued."

Vauxhall is currently facing a criminal investigation over Zafira faults that resulted in 161 model Bs bursting into flames.

The initial problem was with the older heating ventilation and air conditioning systems, where moisture and corrosion made them susceptible to fire.

The car maker believed the issue did not extend to the ECC models, despite warning from The Sun engineers back in 2016, but has recently made a u-turn to recall a further 47,000 models.

Earlier this year, we reported how a dad is suing Vauxhall for £500,000 after claiming he and his three-year-old daughter were trapped in a burning Zafira.
