When temperatures drop, the chemical process in car batteries may slow down - this reduces its ability to hold any kind of charge.

Loss of energy will particularly affect batteries that are more than a few years old in winter, so it's crucial that these are regularly charged.

Breakdown service, the recommends that older batteries in cars that are only used for short trips be charged at least once a week, or replaced if the motor persistently struggles to start.

Preventative measures include regular long drives and turning off unnecessary drains on the battery such as media players or phone chargers. Double-check that all lights are turned off when leaving your car too.

The battery clamps and cables may also be corroded - carefully use a wire brush when the engine is turned off to remove this potential power restriction.

However, if your battery does go flat, a quick fix is to jump-start your car and take it for a drive for a half-hour drive.

Reported problems with alternators also increase by 44 per cent in winter compared to summer, according to ClickMechanic.

This is the generator that charges your car battery - so if it keeps going flat, even when new, the alternator is likely to be the problem.

Cold weather puts a strain on this car part - the RAC also says you may notice it struggling by flickering headlights and dashboard lights.

Meanwhile, signs your starter motor needs replacing is if the car makes a clicking sound when trying to turn it on.

The radio and headlights will also work, despite the engine not starting - meaning the battery isn't flat and, rather, the starter motor may be at fault.

Both alternator and starter motors should be fixed by a qualified mechanic.
