TESLA certainly has a reputation as a leader when it comes to developing electric cars, with billionaire Elon Musk's out-of-the-box thinking headlining its success.

But the latest software update added to the manufacturer's luxury EVs isn't exactly what you would call a ground-breaking development.

Tesla owners can now utilise the gut-busting 'Emissions Testing Mode', which allows them to create fart noises on demand in their car.

The feature lets the driver choose from six different erupting sounds, and then sets them off by using the turn signal or clicking on the steering wheel.

You can even choose which seat the sound appears to come from in an attempt to prank your passengers.

To make it even better, Musk recently agreed on Twitter to make the feature available via Tesla's mobile app, meaning owners are able to rip one while someone else (e.g. their significant other) is driving their car.

So why would the company's billionaire owner want to turn his £70,000 cars into a fleet of giant whoopee cushions? Simply because it's funny. And he can.

Owners seem to be pretty chuffed with the new feature already, with a number taking to Twitter to express their gratitude.

Tesla has always boasted of its ability to wirelessly update the connected vehicles with the latest software, known as "Easter Eggs".

Along with the gift of the guff, the most recent software also comes with a Romance Mode and a Pole Position mode.

Romance Mode lets drivers set up their own virtual fireplace on the car's LCD screen to give their motor a more cosy feel.

And the final addition is a version of the old-school video game of the same name.

But of course, you can only play the game while the car is parked, using the steering wheel as a control.
