Data from online automotive marketplace, CarGurus, showed the models potential buyers were searching for the most across November and December.

The most popular car, the Audi TT Coupe, saw a 154 per cent increase in the number of online views, despite turning 20 this year.

Motorists also showed interest in the sporty Volkswagen Scirocco, while the controversial Vauxhall Zafira slipped into the top three.

Around 47,000 Zafiras were recalled in October over fears they could catch alight, but the issue doesn't seem to be deterring car shoppers.

The most searched for cars this Christmas

These motors have all seen a major increase in the number of Brits searching for them on CarGurus ahead of the festive season:

  1. Audi TT Coupe
  2. Volkswagen Scirocco
  3. Vauxhall Zafira
  4. BMW X1
  5. Peugeot 207
  6. Audi A6
  7. BMW 3 Series
  8. Nissan X-Trail
  9. Mercedes-Benz E-Class
  10. Mitsubishi L200

Popular BMW X1 and 3 series models saw increased views from motorists, while the less glamorous Peugeot 207 proved it can still attract plenty of interest.

And potential buyers also looked at more hardy vehicles to take them through the winter, with the Nissan X-Trail and Mitsubishi L200 getting more screen time.

Chris Knapman, editor at CarGurus, said: “Twenty years after it first went on sale, the Audi TT continues to offer a combination of design, performance and affordability that few other sports cars can match.

"With early examples also being tipped for future classic status, it’s no surprise to see interest has soared in the run up to Christmas."
