Fiat 500 X is a mini SUV that is a big improvement on the original

Katie Glass revels in the new Fiat 500 X - a car which was invented for a woman like her, those on a Primark budget with Range Rover goals

NEARLY 12million of the 35million cars on our roads are owned by women – well over a third.

Last time I checked I’m a bloke, so with that in mind I’m introducing a monthly review from my colleague KATIE GLASS – a fully paid-up member of the motoring community and female of the species.

On the first Sunday of every month Katie will give her verdict on a popular motor, giving a different perspective.

Here is week one of Glass’s Guide…

OF COURSE I love the Fiat 500 X – it was invented for a woman like me, on a Primark budget with Range Rover goals.

A woman who spent her twenties downing tequila shots on group holidays in Ibiza and dating hot but hopeless boys.

The styling of the Fiat 500 hasn't changed that much - but it's changed just enough

A woman who has matured into her thirties, so now wants a car with room to do all the same things but with a dog in tow.

Basic b*tches have always loved the Fiat 500.

Jackie-O drove one. Pope Francis does. Gaddafi had one customised in the colours of the Libyan flag.

On Twitter the Fiat 500 has its own fanbase of girls doing duck-face selfies, tweeting about Love Island and why they love a Chinese.

The parody Fiat 500 Twitter account is infamous for such bon mots as “Hate boys – can’t wait til Ibiza with my girls xx”.

I currently drive a white 500 so I was excited to upgrade – the X is what happens when Fiat 500 grows up. It arrived in kale green.

Allegedly the brief for the X was to “take the Fiat and make it bigger”. Now it’s a mini SUV. An affordable Chelsea tractor.

A Chigwell tractor if you will. It looks like a Mini if you squint, but there’s more boot for your buck and more leg-room in the back.

Although frankly if you were reduced to climbing into the back of my Fiat you’d probably just be glad of the lift.

Most likely you’d be desperately trying to get home from Reading Festival still wearing wellies and a sequin bikini. (While we’re on the subject, the X is built for festivals because it comes in 4-wheel drive with a massive boot).

It comes fitted with motion sensors, which might seem sensible for first-time SUV drivers except problematically they’re more easily triggered than an audience of millennial snowflakes at a Frankie Boyle gig.

They go off if anyone gets close, emitting a constant stream of minimal techno to remind me of my own inadequacies.

It seems strange to say it, but the 500 X has a 4-wheel-drive option and an extremely roomy boot

Underneath the cutesy exterior the base is a Jeep Renegade with the suspension tweaked.

The ride can be bumpy. The gears sticky.

Still, if you’re upgrading from the 500 you’ll be too busy swanking around feeling grown-up to care, despite the fact you’re still chauffeuring around your latest bad boyfriend and playing Britney.
