Toyota Prius is crowned the UK’s best car by drivers after beating Lexus and Kia models into top spot
The Mark 4 Prius scored 93.22 out of 100 to land the Driver Power award from Auto Express
CABBIE’S favourite the Toyota Prius has been voted Britain’s best car.
The world’s best-selling hybrid, instantly recognisable to anyone who takes an Uber, landed the accolade after a survey of nearly 30,000 drivers.
The Mark 4 Prius scored 93.22 out of 100 to land the Driver Power award from Auto Express.
It beat the Lexus IS, one of three models from Japanese company Toyota’s luxury brand in the top ten.
It also eclipsed last year’s winner, the Peugeot 3008, which was seventh.
Auto Express described the Prius as efficient and safe, adding: “Owners tell us the car offers savings, such as on insurance, and heap praise on the servicing costs.
“It also gains high marks for three elements that make up our engine and gearbox category, suggesting it is as smooth as it is fast and quiet.”
The winner was chosen from the 100 best-selling new cars over the past two years. They were rated by drivers for a range of features, from comfort to reliability, ease of driving and cost and frequency of repairs.
Hybrid and electric cars were once considered to be expensive and trendy. But now they are bought for their reliability, cheap tax and remarkable fuel consumption.
Six of the top ten in the annual Driver Power survey are available in either electric of hybrid versions.

The Prius, which averages 52 miles a gallon, is a favourite with cabbies for being cheap to run yet roomy.
Toyota’s Paul Van der Burgh said: “It’s wonderful that, more than 20 years after Prius kick-started the electrification revolution, this hybrid is Driver Power’s new car in 2019.
“It’s a testament to Toyota’s constant innovation combined with a relentless focus on quality.”
