The car that hit and killed biker Harry, 19, was allegedly being driven by Anne Sacoolas, 44, the wife of an American diplomat

They are near RAF Croughton, Northamptonshire, which is used by US spies.

Motorcyclist Harry, 19, was killed in a crash with a car travelling on the wrong side of the road in August.

The car was allegedly being driven by Anne Sacoolas, 44, the wife of an American diplomat. She has since left the country and claimed diplomatic immunity in the US.

Some people living close to the airbase said the signs and markings had come too late. Others mocked them.

One said: “It’s unbelievable, the idea that top intelligence officers can’t remember which side to drive on.”

“It’s almost an admission that they can’t be trusted to remember, which is a bit damning when they’re supposed to be spying on our enemies.”

Another resident Ian Parkes said on Facebook: “The Highways have painted two arrows leaving the base. One in each direction.

“Just a simple thing that had it been done sooner could have saved a life. It is so tragic and not the first time it’s happened outside a US base.”

Mrs Sacoolas, 44, was said to have been caught on camera driving her two-tonne Volvo XC90 on the wrong side of the road and spoke to police.

She was later secretly flown out of the country on a private flight with her family from RAF Mildenhall, Suffolk.

Harry’s parents flew to the US yesterday to highlight the tragedy. Last night it emerged a lawyer for Mrs Sacoolas had contacted them to arrange a meeting.
