BRING HER BACK

Harry Dunn’s alleged killer could be extradited back to the UK by Boris Johnson

THE US diplomat’s wife accused of killing a British teenager in a hit-and-run could be extradited back to the UK by Boris Johnson, it emerged today.

Anne Sacoolas, 42, was driving on the wrong side of the road when she collided with Harry Dunn’s motorbike outside an RAF base in Northamptonshire in August.

She was given diplomatic immunity and fled to the US without facing UK courts over the death of the 19-year-old.

But in a major breakthrough, Harry's parents were told she no longer had this diplomatic protection - because she is now in America.

Northamptonshire Police have today said they will "soon" submit a case file to the horror crash to the CPS for a charging decision.

If charges are brought forward, the CPS will draft an extradition request which is sent to the Home Office which is responsible for transmission.

EXTRADITION

British police officers will then travel to the US to collect Sacoobas and return her to the UK.

It comes as Sacoolas could be handed an Interpol red notice, meaning she risks arrest if she ever leaves the US.

If she is charged with causing death by careless driving, or a more serious charge of causing death by dangerous driving, the force can issue an extradition request or a red notice by Interpol.

The family also has the option of bringing a civil case against Sacoolas.

Harry's heartbroken parents met Donald Trump last night who asked them three times if they wanted to meet her – but they held firm and will only meet her on UK soil.

Jeremy Hunt said it was a “mistake to spirit her out of country” and there is still a “possibility of a normal legal process”.

There is the possibility of a normal legal process; I expect that is what will happen.

Jeremy Hunt

When asked about an extradition, he said: “Presumably, yes.”

Speaking to Sky News, Mr Hunt said: “It was a mistake to spirit her out of the country.

“I think that was immensely disrespectful to Harry Dunn’s family and the relationship with the UK to do that.

“I think they need to find a way to bring her back. We have the rule of law, it’s absolutely right that Anne Sacoolas faces it.

“However sorry she is, she needs to recognise that. How would they feel if the boot was on the other foot?

“This is where your relationships with the key players are very important.

“Diplomatic immunity has been lifted and it is an encouraging sign that President Trump realises this issue cannot be left to rest.

“There is the possibility of a normal legal process; I expect that is what will happen.”

A CPS spokesman said: "We are working closely with Northamptonshire Police whose investigation continues.

"We will consider a charging decision if they refer a full file of evidence to us.

It's our expectation that we will be able to submit a case file very shortly to the CPS.

Northamptonshire Police

"There is no need for extradition proceedings if the requested person volunteers to come to the UK. Extradition proceedings being if they do not."

Northamptonshire Police said: "We we will do everything on our side to ensure a full and thorough investigation takes place in order to get the justice Harry and his family deserve.

"Furthermore, we are working very closely with the Crown Prosecution Service with whom we visited the collision site earlier today.

"It's our expectation that we will be able to submit a case file very shortly to the CPS.

"The police investigation is still under way and, if appropriate, a file of evidence will be submitted when the investigation is completed."

It comes just hours after Trump met the parents of Harry and attempted to get them to come face-to-face with their son's alleged killer in an extraordinary White House summit.

INAPPROPRIATE MEETING

The US President even held hands with mum Charlotte Charles as he ambushed her with the prospect of meeting Sacoolas who was waiting nearby.

Teenager Harry's devastated parents Charlotte and Tim Dunn described Trump's surprising move to bring Sacoolas to the West Wing as "inappropriate" and said such a meeting should only take place in Britain.

Charlotte said Trump asked them three times to meet Sacoolas so she could "get some healing".

She told CBS in New York today: "He offered his condolences, he seemed warm and he was welcoming but it didn't take long for him to drop into the conversation that Anne Sacoolas was in the building.

"It took your breath away when he mentioned it for the first time. He did ask two or three times.

"We said no, we didn't feel it was right and he said: 'No she's here so let's get some healing' or something like that - but we stuck to our guns."

MOST FAMOUS EXTRADITION CASES

As of April 2013, 77 individuals had been extradited from the UK to the US – compared to just 38 people going the other way.

Here are some of the most famous cases in recent years:

2014 - British solider David McIntyre was extradited to the US on fraud charges and was accused of overcharging the US Institute of Peace by $100,000.

2012 - Scottish hacker Gary McKinnon was almost extradited to the US to face accusations he was behind the “biggest military computer hack of all time”, however Theresa May withdrew her order at the last minute over fears he would end his life.

2012 - Richard O’Dwyer was charged by the Southern District Court in New York with conspiracy to commit copyright infringement. Theresa May approved the extradition order but he later signed a deferred prosecution agreement to avoid extradition and was ordered to pay a £20,000 fine.

2010 - Businessman Ian Norris was extradited to the US in March 2010 for alleged price fixing when it was not a crime in the UK.

2006 - NatWest Three Giles Darby, David Bermingham and Gary Mulgrew were extradited to Texas on fraud charges against a UK bank while they were living in Britain.
