How old was the Queen during World War 2?

Queen Elizabeth was born Elizabeth Alexandra Mary of York on April 21, 1926.

Her Majesty was only 13 years old when WW2 began.

The Second World War started in 1939 after Germany launched an unprovoked attack on Poland.

France and Britain then declared war on Germany after Hitler refused to abort his invasion.

World War Two came to an end six years later in 1945.

Did the Queen serve in the military?

When Britain entered WW2 in September 1939, a Tory MP urged the Queen Mother to take Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret to Canada to avoid the bombing.

But she famously said: "The children won't go without me. I won't leave without the King. And the King will never leave."

The Queen spent months of her 18th year, begging her father to allow her to serve in the military.

He permitted her to join the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service during World War II.

Her Majesty was known as Second Subaltern Elizabeth Windsor.

During the military, she wore overalls and trained in London as a mechanic and military truck driver.

The Queen is the only female member of the royal family to have entered the armed forces and is the only living head of state who served in World War II.

The Queen appeared very emotional during a Remembrance Sunday service ( November 10, 2019) as Britain fell silent.

A two minutes silence was observed at 11am - with its beginning and end marked by the firing of a gun by the King's Troop Royal Horse Artillery.

Buglers of the Royal Marines sounded the Last Post before wreaths were laid at the Cenotaph by the royals, politicians, foreign representatives and senior armed forces personnel.
