France and Britain then declared war on Germany after Hitler refused to abort his invasion.
World War Two came to an end six years later in 1945.

When Britain entered WW2 in September 1939, a Tory MP urged the Queen Mother to take Princess Elizabeth and Princess Margaret to Canada to avoid the bombing.
But she famously said: "The children won't go without me. I won't leave without the King. And the King will never leave."
The Queen spent months of her 18th year, begging her father to allow her to serve in the military.
He permitted her to join the Women’s Auxiliary Territorial Service during World War II.
