SUN readers were praised last night for raising £100m for good causes since the paper was launched 50 years ago.

In a video address to the Society of Editors 20th anniversary gala dinner, The Sun’s owner Rupert Murdoch said: “I want to thank our millions of readers over the years.

From our first edition to today, Sun readers have raised £100million for good causes

“From raising money for Help for Heroes at a time when our wounded troops were being vilified, to knitting blankets for children freezing in refugee camps, we have seen acts of huge generosity.”

The News Corp Executive Chairman also spoke of the continuing fight to protect free speech as The Sun picked up a special award for 50 years of championing good causes.
