Niall Tóibín dead aged 89 – Ballykissangel star and Irish comedian dies in Dublin
BALLYKISSANGEL star and Irish comedian Niall Tóibín has today died aged 89.
The actor, who appeared in a number of films and TV shows, died in Dublin after battling a long illness.
He was best known for playing Father MacAnally in the hit BBC series about life in a rural Irish community from 1996 until 2001.
Niall, from Cork, started his career in radio drama but went on to star in Ryan's Daughter, Veronica Guerin and The Irish RM.
In 1992 he starred alongside Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman in the film Far and Away.
The dad-of-five was working last year and appeared in a short film called Remains.
He is survived by his children Sean, Muireann, Aisling, Sighle and Fiana. His wife Judy died in 2002.
Niall was given a lifetime achievement award from the Irish Film and Television Academy in 2011 and was awarded the freedom of Cork in 2015.
