A HERO schoolgirl is fighting for her life after she was stabbed shielding her baby nephew from a machete gang.
The girl, 13, was left critically injured protecting the 11-month-old boy from thugs who stormed into a house in Northern Ireland last night.
Relative Elizabeth Joyce, who was also injured in the brutal attack in Lisnakea, Co Fermanagh, said she risked her life to save her nephew, who was unharmed.
Elizabeth, 41, told : "The baby was unharmed because his auntie is a hero.
"She's 13-years-old and she threw her whole self over that baby, and she saved his life. She is a hero.
"It is something that we will never get over."
Police say they are treating the attack as attempted murder.

Officers were called at 9.15pm and found the injured the woman and child, who were then rushed to hospital.
The young girl suffered serious injuries and is in a critical but stable condition in hospital.
A 41-year-old woman was also treated for stab wounds.
Detective Sergeant Keith Monaghan said: “This must have been a terrifying ordeal for those involved and we are determined to find the men responsible.
