Disney slammed for selling plastic Frozen 2 toys when braging about being green and ‘trashing the environment’

CAMPAIGNERS have blasted Disney for selling plastic Frozen II film souvenirs while bragging about their green credentials.

They accuse the movie giant of contributing to “trashing the environment” with the production of “cheap, short-use toys”.

Around 40 dolls and figurines have been on sale in the UK since the film’s recent opening — many made largely of plastic and in plastic packaging.

Black Friday saw thousands of cut-price dolls and toys of popular characters Elsa and Anna sold in the UK.

Elsa is said to be loosely based on 16-year-old environmental activist Greta Thunberg.

In Frozen II, Elsa and sister Anna find mistakes by earlier generations led to a curse on their kingdom — which has been compared to climate change.

Emma Preistland, of group Break Free From Plastic, said Disney need to find a way to continue the joy their films bring to children “without relying on plastic that will inevitably end up trashing the environment”.

Friends of the Earth’s plastic campaigner Julian Kirby said: “Disney has spoken about reducing their environmental impact so cutting out frivolous plastic would be a positive step.”

Frozen made £1billion worldwide in takings after its release in 2013.

Merchandise and licensing sales globally topped £400million.

Disney, who say they are committed to “environmental stewardship”, did not respond to requests for comment.
