Somerset earthquake rattles houses as 3.2 magnitude tremors hit the region
SOMERSET was hit by a earthquake last night that many locals described as sounding like an "explosion".
The British Geological Survey confirmed an earthquake had struck near Bridgewater at 10.49pm and lasted for a few seconds.
It marked a 3.2 on the Richter scale, with people saying they felt the earthquake in Bridgewater, Taunton, Yeovil and Cheddar.
Social media was flooded with people reporting the shaking across the county.
Claire Berryman said: "I felt the earthquake, the whole house creaked and I heard a bang."
Jahn Callow, from Street, said: "Felt it here. Shook the house and rattled the doors. Quite a shock went outside to make sure nobody had crashed into the house."
Julia Thompson, from Barrington, said: "I just experienced my first earthquake. There was a definite rumble, the bed vibrated and my tea cups on the side rattled.
"My blood ran cold...it could have been a big lorry passing on the road outside but it felt like it came up from the foundations."
One Somerset resident tweeted: "It was quite brief, but a definite tremor.
"My milk bottles rattled on the worktop and then the whole house shook...like if a lorry had passed at high speed."

The British Geological Survey confirmed they had received "several reports of the event being felt in several towns and villages in Somerset.
"Reports described whole houses rattling, a big rumble and the bed physically shake."
