HSBC website down as customers unable to use online banking

HSBC's website appears to have crashed tonight with customers complaining they're unable to use their online banking.

Customers have reported being unable to use the HSBC and First Direct websites since around 8.30pm this evening.

First Direct wrote on Twitter: "Our Online and Mobile Banking services are currently unavailable.

"We're really sorry and are working hard to fix this."

HSBC said: "We're aware some customers are having problems using Online & Mobile Banking.

"We're really sorry and are working hard to fix this. Please check back here for the latest updates."

Fuming customers wrote on Twitter that they are unable to access their money just days before Christmas.

Suzanne Wareing tweeted: "Why can I not log into my app @HSBC_UK I’m going to get a charge of I can’t move money before 23:45!".

Adam Cox said: "All online systems are down and you’ve haven’t even made a statement here. Poor."

Llywelyn Ryhs wrote: "@HSBC_UK web site is down. I've been on hold for a very long time to make an urgent payment.

"If i'm 1 min late over my overdraft limit #HSBC will charge me. Will they now compensate me?"

Greg Phillips said: "@HSBC_UK Any chance of you telling your customers what's going on?"

An HSBC UK spokesperson: “We are aware that some of our customers are experiencing issues accessing Online and Mobile Banking services, and are working hard to fix this.

"We aim to update our customers regularly, and are very sorry for any inconvenience caused.

"Any overdraft charges incurred as a result of not being able to access online/mobile banking will be automatically refunded.”
