The inside of the card depicts a cartoon figure resembling Trump with two bullet holes in his chest, lying in a pool of blood in the middle of a busy street.

He's surrounded by smiling civilians and the gunman, who appear to be in good spirits as they all say in unison: "Merry Christmas!"

The card is signed "from all of us at Hustler" in the bottom right corner, as shown in photos obtained by .

The cover references a statement Trump made at a about being able to get away with murder and still top presidential polls.

"I could stand in the middle of 5th Avenue and shoot somebody and I wouldn't lose voters," he told his supporters in Iowa.

Across the political spectrum, many people were offended and unimpressed by the porno mag's attempt to poke fun at the sitting US president.

"The assassination of anyone is counterproductive to the values of Americans," wrote one Twitter user.

"No true American would ever think of such a thing regardless of party or non party affiliation."

"I'm no fan of Trump and I believe he has committed crimes against humanity, violated his oath of office...but to joke about his assassination is not funny," tweeted another.

One of the recipients, Rep. Mike Johnson, delivered his own scathing rebuke of the card and even called on the US Secret Service to investigate.

"Here's all you need to know about the radical Left. A young staffer of mine opened this in a stack of holiday mail today.

"Just imagine if a conservative had distributed such a disgusting and hateful piece about a Democrat.

"I hope this will be investigated by the @secretservice."

Mark Zaid, the anti-Trump attorney of the whistleblower in the Ukraine scandal, also condemned the greeting card.

"This is unacceptable, and clearly I'm no fan of this President. But this absolutely crosses the line and there should be a public apology," he said.

"Something like this is not a joking matter."
