Alvarado was using drugs with two cousins after losing her job in a dental office because of a failed drugs test.

Sophia, who had got up in the night looking for a drink, immediately spat the water out and said "yucky" and before long began experiencing hallucinations.

Rather than seek medical attention, the three adults began praying and reading from a bible, with the mother fearing that she would lose custody of the child were she to contact emergency services.

Even after Sophie lost consciousness, she was moved to another apartment and given oxygen through a tube.

She was eventually driven to Grand River Hospital, but pronounced dead early on December 11.

A coroner's report found "very, very high" levels of methamphetamine in Sophie's blood.

Police also uncovered small plastic bags filled with white powder as well as pipes and bongs in the apartment.

They also found drug residue on a dollar bill.

Sophia's death was last week ruled to have been caused by methamphetamine intoxication.

Alvarado and her cousins - Bertha Karina Ceballos-Romo, 28, and Daniel Alvarado, 27 - were arrested last Thursday, the reports.

They are all charged with child abuse resulting in death, possession of a controlled substance and reckless endangerment, according to a Rifle police arrest warrant affidavit.

Sophia’s dad, Alec Larson, 23, had shared physical custody of her since separating with Alvarado more than a year ago because of her drug use.

He told that Sophia's death has “changed me in a way that scares me.”

“If they would have taken her when they saw my daughter drank that, she may have been a little slow and not right in the head - but my daughter would still be here with me today,” he said.

“I miss her every second, every day.”
