But while he uses an office in Downing Street, Mr Sunak has told friends he hasn’t had a spare minute to think about moving in his family yet.

The flat next door to the PM’s is currently empty, while his wife and two daughters stay on in the £7m family home in Kensington, West London.

He has also revealed to allies that he is getting by on just four hours sleep a night as he battles against time to write the Budget in the midst of the coronavirus crisis.

Lifting the lid of how gets through his punishing work schedule, Mr Sunak credited “late night Nandos and Skittles”.

But he added to Ridge on Sunday: “I make sure the team is getting broccoli, which nobody was that excited about, apart from my wife at home who wanted to make sure I was still eating greens”.

Wealthy former investment banker Mr Sunak married Akshata Murthy, the daughter of Indian billionaire after they met at University.

The couple own four houses in total, including a £1.5m Georgian mansion in Mr Sunak’s North Yorkshire constituency, a flat in Chelsea and an apartment in Santa Monica, California.
