SIX residents at a care home have tested positive for coronavirus.

NHS Lanarkshire confirmed the positive cases at Highgate Care Home in Uddingston, Scotland.

Those affected are being monitored closely as measures are being taken to prevent the spread of the virus.

Dr John Logan, NHS Lanarkshire consultant in public health medicine, said: “We appreciate this is a very worrying time for many people.

"Highgate Care Home has implemented infection prevention and control measures and the NHS Lanarkshire Health Protection Team will continue to provide advice and support to the care home manager and staff.”

“Advice for everyone about reducing the risk of becoming infected with coronavirus and of passing infection to others is available from the  website.

"This includes the need to self-isolate for 7 days if people develop a new persistent cough or a fever and the importance of personal hygiene including hand washing.”

John Kirk, Managing Director of Highgate Care Home, said: “The health, safety and wellbeing of our residents and colleagues is of paramount importance. As such, we are committed to doing everything we can to keep them safe.

“We are working closely with all the relevant bodies, including NHS Lanarkshire and Health Protection Scotland, as we implement our comprehensive contingency plan, which includes closing the home to all but absolutely essential visitors, and continuing to take steps to ensure the highest standards of hygiene and infection control.”

It comes after three Scottish schools - Dunblane High, Murroes Primary, and Isobel Mair School today announced they would be closed tomorrow.

The number of cases in Scotland today rose to 153 with 4,240 people now tested. Nationwide, the tally has hit 1,391 people confirmed to have the virus.

And a Coatbridge church is in lockdown after a young parishioner tested positive for Covid-19.

We told earlier how Scotland's 700,000 school pupils could be sent home for more than four months in a drastic bid to slow the spread of coronavirus.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has urged organisers to "cancel or postpone" large events earlier today.

The Scottish Government said they do not have powers to cancel events but pleaded with promoters to "act responsibility".
