Second national lockdown: When will pubs, bars, gyms, restaurants and shops close?

IT will be a rough month ahead for the hospitality industry as pubs, bars and restaurants are all set to close in a bid to curb a second wave of coronavirus. 

From next week, all pubs and restaurants will close, four months after the end of the first UK-wide shutdown. Here's everything we know.

Will bars and restaurants close?

Pubs and restaurants across the UK are bracing to close their doors for an entire month.

All pubs and restaurants in England will shut after Wednesday but will be allowed to do takeaways and deliveries.

Greggs and McDonald's are among those that will remain open despite the new rules.

The entirety of England had already been under a 10pm hospitality curfew and forced to abide by the Rule of Six for weeks.

A number of European countries, including Ireland, Italy and Spain, have gone into lockdown to limit the spread of , ordering all pubs and non-essential shops and centres to be closed.

Will gyms have to close?

Yes. Gyms are deemed to be 'high risk' environments.

They will shut their doors from Thursday to help limit the spread of the second wave.

Leisure centres, such as bowling alleys and soft play centres, will also close.

What shops will have to close?

All businesses deemed to be "non-essential" will close.

This means all non-essential retail will close including those that sell clothing, electronics, books, gifts and homewares. 

But customers will still be able to use delivery and the Click and Collect services.

Below is a list of what is to close:

  • Restaurants
  • Pubs
  • Bars
  • Non-essential shops, including electronics and clothing stores
  • Leisure centres, such as bowling alleys and soft play centres
  • Hairdressers and nail salons 
  • Gyms

 

 

The new lockdown measures include:

  • Pubs and restaurants will shut but will be allowed to do takeaways and deliveries
  • Nurseries and schools are to remain open
  • International travel will be banned - except for work
  • No overnight stays and internal UK-wide travel is discouraged
  • All non-essential retail will close, but supermarkets will be able to sell any and all goods they like
  • There will be a nationwide ban on people mixing indoors - except for childcare
  • People will be allowed to exercise as much as they like
  • Manufacturing and construction will be encouraged to keep going - and Parliament and courts will stay open

Anyone breaking the rules will be liable for fines from at least £30 - and up to £1,000.
