If the Prime Minister has coronavirus then it’s clear how easy it is to catch
Poorly PM
IF Boris Johnson, his Health Secretary and Chief Medical Officer can come down with coronavirus on the same day, with all they know about avoiding it, it is clear how easy it is to catch.
It’s a relief that Boris, Matt Hancock and Chris Whitty have only developed mild symptoms so far.

But they ought to be a wake-up call for the small minority of people still not taking social distancing seriously.
It seems increasingly likely that the number of us now suffering from Covid-19, or already recovered, is huge.
That would have vital implications for the mortality rate, even if the terrible daily death toll is still climbing sharply, and for our chances of returning to normal life sooner rather than later. Mass self-testing cannot come fast enough.
The Government believes the disease will peak here shortly after Easter, just over a fortnight away. We must grit our teeth, stay safe and hope that is so.
The priority is, of course, still saving lives and enabling the NHS to cope.
But we must also pray the paralysing of our economy lasts weeks, not months — or it could be destroyed for a generation.

Fool’s gold
JEREMY Corbyn saved his dimmest remarks till last.
The idea that emergency bailouts during a deadly pandemic prove him “right” about vastly increasing public spending betrays a childlike misunderstanding of our economy and the crisis itself.
Ploughing huge sums into saving 250,000 lives and millions of jobs is not some lesson the Tories learned from Corbyn, no matter how tragically desperate he is for a “legacy”. It is what a government should do, but only when faced with a life-or-death situation. It is not a sane strategy for normal times.
What the old dunce cannot grasp is that such gargantuan bailouts will need to be paid back by years of tax rises and further austerity. If he wants credit for the spending, will he also accept responsibility for that future hardship?
No, we didn’t think so.
Corbyn will be remembered as Labour’s worst-ever leader, the architect of their most abject defeat in 85 years. He drew anti-Semites like flies to dung. He repelled decent Labour MPs and voters.
Only leftie cranks and Tories will miss him.
Cheque it out
IN six weeks as Chancellor, Rishi Sunak has saved an estimated 1.5million jobs and bailed out Britain. Not a shabby start.

No wonder his approval rating is off the chart. We hope, though, he knows how tough it is for many self-employed workers to wait till June for any cash.
Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham’s call for an immediate £1,000 cheque for each, deductible from their final handout, must be worth considering.
What a difference it would make.
