UK weather forecast – Heatwave set to see Britain as hot as Corfu with sun and 20C temperatures

LOCKDOWN Britain is on the brink of a mini heatwave with temperatures set to soar over the coming days.

The super scorcher will begin tomorrow, Saturday, with widespread 15C highs but health officials have urged Brits not to flock to parks and beaches during the coronavirus lockdown.

It will get even hotter on Sunday with a sizzling 20C making it the warmest day of the year so far - and as hot as Corfu.

The current record of 19.4C was set in Rhyl, North Wales, on March 24.

The mercury will remain high into next week with a maximum of 18C expected each day until at least Wednesday.

The predicted temperatures are well above the 11C average for April.

The weather has sparked concerns that people will break the coronavirus lockdown rules this weekend and that parks and roads will be busy.

England's deputy chief medical officers Professor Jonathan Van Tam said: "Whatever the weather, we all have a shared responsibility to protect those around us, and the single most important action we can all take in fighting coronavirus is to stay at home in order to protect the NHS and save lives."

There is currently no specific definition for a heatwave.

But forecasters generally agree it occurs when the daily maximum temperature exceeds the average by 5C or more for three or more days.

The Met Office's Bonnie Diamond said: "The heat is being turned up this weekend.

"There's plenty of sunshine on it's way and for most of us it's going to feel like Summer.

"It is fair to say we could see a heatwave on the cards.

"The best of the warmer weather will come on Sunday with 20C highs.

"Temperatures will remain above the average for this time of year with 18C possible on Monday, Tuesday and even Wednesday.

"These much higher temperatures are coming from Europe on the back of southerly wind flows."

Overnight temperatures are also expected to become milder.

But the heatwave may prove only to be a brief respite from the cold weather – bookies have cut the odds on this Easter being the coldest ever.

Coral has snow falling during April as odds-on at 4-5 while it is 2-1 for the white stuff to come down during the Easter weekend.
