Boris Johnson was discharged from hospital on Sunday after a week in St Thomas’ Hospital in central London - including three nights in intensive care - after being admitted with the coronavirus.

Downing Street have confirmed the PM will continue his recovery at Chequers with his pregnant fiancée Carrie Symonds.

The pair had not seen each other for more than a week since he was admitted to hospital last Sunday.

Government sources said he would rest and recuperate for at least a week, but medical experts suggested he could need significantly longer.

Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab will continue to take control of the government as de facto PM.

Who are NHS nurses Jenny and Luis?

The two nurses individually praised by the PM were Jenny McGee, 35, from New Zealand and Luis Pitarma, 29, from Portugal.

In a video recorded after his release on Sunday, Boris Johnson praised the hospital's workers, saying the NHS had "saved my life, no question".

He said the two "stood by my bedside for 48 hours when things could have gone either way".
Portugal's President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa contacted Luis Pitarma to personally congratulate him on the "special recognition" given to him by Boris.

The PM said: “The reason in the end my body did start to get enough oxygen was because for every second of the night they were watching and they were thinking and they were caring and making the interventions I needed.”

Jenny's brother Rob McGee hailed his sister and NHS staff as she returned to work last night.

He told :  "She is very humble and is back at work now for another night shift.

"She said she was just really pleased to see all the hard working people in the NHS be recognised for the amazing work they are doing."

Mr McGee added: "She is just doing her job, and that is how she sees it.

"This is what she was trained for, helping people who need care. [Medics are] special people."

: “We are all very proud of Jen, and to get acknowledged by Boris is something else.”

Luis's cousin, firefighter Ivo Pitarma, who lives in Aveiro, said: “I’m obviously very proud.

“I of course knew he was a nurse in London, but I had no idea he had been looking after Boris Johnson so this has come as a real surprise for me.”
