What is Believe Me: The Cyprus Rape Case about?

ITV's Believe Me: The Cyprus Rape Case is a documentary which will look at the teenager who was convicted of making up gang rape claims in Cyprus.

In this television interview, the 19-year old woman, known as Emily, will speak out for the first time about what happened.

The documentary will also listen to her mother, her friends and the man who stumbled upon her shortly after the alleged rape.

The teen is adamant she was speaking the truth, but that she was pressured by local police in Cyprus to retract her allegations.

In the exclusive interview with Julie Etchingham, Emily said "There was no other way out of that police station other than sign that retraction statement.

I thought as soon as I am outside that volatile environment I can sort this out.

When you are in that situation, the only sensible thing to do is conform.’’

What happened in the Ayia Napa rape case?

Emily claimed that she was raped by up to 12 Israeli tourists in a hotel room in Ayia Napa on July 17.

The British student was subsequently stuck on the Mediterranean island for almost five months.

Emily was charged with public mischief and spent a month in prison before being granted bail in August.

She was sentenced to a four-month hail term, which was suspended for three years on January 7 before she was able to return to the UK.

The 12 men were released without charge.

Emily appealed against the public mischief conviction to Cyrus’s supreme court.

The documentary will look at the inconsistencies in the suspects’ account of that night, and will feature a former Home Office adviser who will look at the evidence from the alleged attack.

The programme will also listen to Emily’s friends and a British man who saw her shortly after the alleged rape.
