Back our campaign to award brave NHS staff fighting coronavirus with the George Cross medal

SUN readers are today urged to sign a petition calling for our NHS staff to be awarded the George Cross.

Yesterday, we backed a proposal by Lord Ashcroft to honour our health heroes with the gallantry gong given for acts of bravery that did not take place in battle.

The George Cross is a recognition of heroism when faced with a non-military enemy.

Downing Street appeared to give veiled support to The Sun’s campaign, and said the government would thank staff, once the crisis was over.

The PM’s spokesman said: “The PM has been clear about the debt of gratitude we all owe the NHS workforce.

“Our thoughts are with anyone who has lost a loved one from coronavirus including NHS staff.

“The NHS is doing a fantastic job and the nation will want to find a way to say thank you when we have defeated this virus.”

SAS hero Andy McNab added: “The award of a George Cross would show an emotional appreciation.”

The GC is the UK’s second-most prestigious medal after the Victoria Cross. It was created by George VI in 1940 and awarded to bomb disposal men, civilian and military, in the Blitz.

It has been given out as a collective honour twice before — in 1942 to Malta, and in 1999 to the RUC.

The call comes as thankful Brits took to their doorsteps tonight for the fourth time to applaud the selfless NHS workers fighting the disease.

Give now to The Sun's NHS appeal

BRITAIN’s four million NHS staff are on the frontline in the battle against coronavirus.

But while they are helping save lives, who is there to help them?

The Sun has launched an appeal to raise £1MILLION for NHS workers.

The Who Cares Wins Appeal aims to get vital support to staff in their hour of need.

We have teamed up with NHS Charities Together in their urgent Covid-19 Appeal to ensure the money gets to exactly who needs it.

The Sun is donating £50,000 and we would like YOU to help us raise a million pounds, to help THEM.

No matter how little you can spare, please donate today here
