We are truly humbled by your £1m for the NHS while livelihoods are at risk

Sun in a million

SUPER Sun readers have always been marked out by their generosity.

But this time, you really have surpassed yourselves.

In the space of just one month, you’ve raised an eye-watering £1million for the NHS — money that will be used to provide crucial sleep pods for exhausted teams, food for staff unable to be at home, and care packs and wash bags to help stop the spread of the killer bug.

We thank each and every one of you from the bottom of hearts.

From 90-year-old Diana Pleasants — who asked for donations instead of birthday gifts — to Madeleine Floyd, seven, who gave away the money she made from selling Easter sweets.

We are truly humbled by your kindness.

And we know that the nurses, doctors, therapists, cleaners, pharmacists, paramedics and countless others giving their all to fight coronavirus will be too.

Giving away hard-earned cash in times of plenty is impressive.

But doing so while your own livelihood is at risk shows selflessness few could match.

School of duty

THE news that the Government plans to start opening schools next month comes as a huge relief.

The benefit for disadvantaged kids is enormous: Children, particularly younger ones, thrive on routine. And though wealthy, middle-class parents might have the time to devise homework timetables, ordinary workers struggling to get food on the table certainly don’t.

But that’s just half of it.

If schools are allowed to open their gates, millions of parents who’ve been stuck at home will be free to return to work — kickstarting the economy and refilling the country’s empty coffers.

Yes, lifting social distancing restrictions comes with an element of risk.

But simple measures like staggering classes and play times should make teachers and parents feel safe.

In his Prime

WE always knew the Prime Minister’s mind was fully invested in getting Britain out of this mess.

But now we know his heart and soul are too.

His emotional speech after leaving hospital moved us greatly.

And his extended interview in The Sun was yet more evidence that his passion for the NHS runs deep.

A new baby and a near-death experience would be enough to take the wind out of most people.

But not our unstoppable PM.

In true Boris style, he’s back in the driving seat stronger and steadier than before.

And we couldn’t be happier to see him there.

Join our George Cross campaign for NHS staff

We are urging Sun readers to sign a petition calling for our NHS staff to be awarded the George Cross.

We are backing a proposal by Lord Ashcroft to honour our health heroes with the gallantry gong given for acts of bravery that did not take place in battle.

A No10 spokesman said: “The NHS is doing a fantastic job and the nation will want to find a way to say thank you when we have defeated this virus.”

SAS hero Andy McNab added: “The award of a George Cross would show an emotional appreciation.”

We are asking our readers to please sign the petition below.
