Magnitude 6.4 earthquake rocks Nevada town of Tonopah
A STRONG earthquake struck close to the surface in Nevada early today.
The US Geological Survey said the 6.4 magnitude quake hit just after 4am local time near the border with California.
The epicenter was just two and a half miles underground, around 35 miles west of Tonopah.
It struck more than 100 miles from a major city, half-way between Reno and Las Vegas.
But shaking could reportedly be felt by residents in California and Arizona.
Twitter user Ally said she felt it 171 miles away in Modesto, California.
Another user said it woke him up in Reno.
Other said they felt shakes in Las Vegas and as far away as Sacramento.
Three sizeable aftershocks followed minutes later measuring 4.9, 5.1 and 4.7, plus eight more smaller tremors.
Twitter user Bluoz said: "I'm in Tonopah right now. That was a darn good shaker. 3 aftershocks already.
"My van was rockin and rollin!"
